Los Lunas Rail Park gets Switch and Spur!

Industrial Rail Park Project in Los Lunas Moves Forward!

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company installs Rail Switch and Spur to serve Industrial Park

(July 7, 2017 – Los Lunas, NM) – Construction on a 1,400-acre rail-served industrial park in the Village of Los Lunas is moving forward with the installation of a rail switch and spur. Project developers, Rio Real Estate Investment Opportunities, says the new switch and spur means that the venture is one step closer to transforming New Mexico’s transportation and logistics industry.

“In the past, we know that a number of businesses have expressed interest in investing in New Mexico – but a prime consideration has been rail service”, said Lawrence Rael, Managing Member, RIO Real Estate Investment Opportunities. “This new park meets their transportation needs, and makes us competitive with other states that have similar facilities.”

Community leaders broke ground on the Central New Mexico Rail Park in late December, on the heels of an announcement that Facebook would be building a 30-billion dollar data center in the area. The industrial park is designed for large land users, such as third-party logistics operations, as well as sites for manufacturing, warehouse and distribution opportunities, and has a commitment from the BNSF Railway to provide direct service to the 1,400-acre rail park.

“BNSF is proud to support this new rail-served development in New Mexico,” said Ean Johnson, BNSF Regional Manager, Economic Development. “By mid-summer, the track into the park is expected to be completed to transport freight across the region.”

Located in Los Lunas on the north side of N.M. 6, the park has convenient access to two major interstates; I-40 and I-25. The site sits on a BNSF main line known as the Glorieta subdivision and is considered a central connection between southern California and Chicago. The rail switch and spur connect the BNSF line to New Mexico’s largest rail-served industrial park.

“This site is a key asset in regional efforts to diversify the economy”, said Mayor Charles Griego, Village of Los Lunas. ”It is important that we look at bringing jobs to Central New Mexico.”

Last July, the Village of Los Lunas annexed the rail parkland to its municipal boundaries.
